Alecia and Rob on vacation in 2018

Hi! My name is Rob Woelich.

I'm 34 years old and live in Missoula, Montana. I've been married to my beautiful wife Alecia since 2014. I never thought I'd find myself running for a school board, but here we are.

I'll tell you more about myself below. Before we get into my background, though, these are the three most important things you should know about me and my campaign for the Missoula County School Board:

  • I'm a normal, responsible adult with a college degree, federal employment and experience as an educator
  • I believe in science, logic and reason, and I think educational policy decisions should be based on these things
  • I hope to work together with the other school board members, and be a calm voice of reason when it's needed

Please continue reading below to learn more about my background, why I'm running for the school board, and other things you might want to know about someone under your consideration for election to your local government. Thanks again for stopping by!

From Missoula and the Bitterroot Valley

Montana Background

Although I was born in Wyoming, my family has roots in Montana, and so my parents moved back shortly afterwards. I was in the Missoula area by the time I was a few years old. I grew up in Missoula and throughout the Bitterroot Valley, went to school here, and met my wife here. My career path eventually required that I move out of state for a few years, but both my wife and I were excited to return to Missoula in 2020 where we now intend to stay for as long as it is practical.

My Montana-Centered History:

  • 1987: Born in Wyoming
  • Late 1980s: Eastern Montana (Forsyth and Hysham areas)
  • Early 1990s: Missoula (Kona Ranch area)
  • Late 1990s: Lolo (8 miles south of Missoula)
  • Early 2000s: Florence (16 miles south of Missoula)
  • Late 2000s: Missoula (various areas)
  • 2014: Several moves around the country due to career
  • 2020: Back in Missoula! (North Reserve area)

For all intents and purposes, I consider myself a Montana native - it's where I grew up, and it's what I've known most of my life. You can see this by the Missoula-area photos featured around this website - they aren't stock photos or photos from an Internet search, they were all taken by me! I remember the Missoula of the 1990s, and many things have changed since then.

That being said, the only way now is forward, and I hope to do a small part in guiding Missoula to be a better place through involvement in local government.

A Mini-Resume

Education and Employment

A student (left) and me (right) in Phoenix, AZ in 2016

I've been interested in science and technology since I was young. I spent my childhood tinkering with electronics and homebuilt projects, spending time in the school computer labs, and breaking (and then having to figure out how to fix) the family computer numerous times. I also grew up during the early beginnings of the Internet, and have been involved in various web development projects since 5th grade as a result. Amusingly, the first web page I ever built (for Lolo School's Parks project, when I was in 5th grade) is still around in all its 1990s glory , courtesy of the Internet Archive. The website you're looking at right now is my most recent project, and as you can see in comparison, things have come a long way!

In addition to technology, I also had an interest in aviation. I spent my summers as a child being put on airplanes to eastern Montana to spend time with my grandparents, and I thought that flying was about the coolest thing ever. Unfortunately, the flight training process to become a pilot is very expensive, and I didn't have the opportunity to purse it until I was an adult. With the support of my wife and my in-laws, I left college to make a career out of aviation in 2014, which prompted our various moves around the country.

My wife and I lived in Denver in 2014-2015 while I completed flight training, and we also lived in Phoenix and Seattle in 2015 to 2020 to make aviation-related career jumps. I worked as a flight instructor, aerial survey pilot, and airline pilot before moving back to Missoula in 2020 and joining the Federal Aviation Administration in 2021. I now work in Aviation Safety for the FAA. Since leaving the Computer Science program at the University of Montana in 2014, I also returned to school online to finish a Bachelor's degree in Information Technology and Cybersecurity in 2021.

Below are the highlights of my education and employment history.

Education

  • Elementary School: Target Range School, Missoula (1993)
  • Middle School: Lolo School, Lolo (1996)
  • High School: Florence Carlton High School, Florence (2000)
  • College: University of Montana, Missoula (2012, ~2 years completed)
  • Professional: Pilot Training, Denver (2014)
  • College: Capella University, Online (B.S., IT/Cybersecurity, 2021)

Employment

  • Retail/Technical: Best Buy/Geek Squad (2008)
  • Flight Instruction: Transpac Aviation Academy, Phoenix (2015)
  • Aerial Survey: Operated nationwide, lived in Phoenix (2017)
  • Airline: United Express regional airline (2019)
  • Airline: Horizon Air regional airline (2020)
  • Government: Federal Aviation Administration (2021)

Teaching People How to Fly

Educator Experience

I've been teaching people how to fly airplanes since 2015, when I became a FAA Certificated Flight Instructor (CFI).

The process to become a flight instructor includes studying how humans learn and how to effectively communicate and teach. In fact, a flight instructor also spends a lot of time on the ground teaching students traditionally using lesson plans, references, and drawings on a whiteboard or other appropriate visual aids. Many instructors, myself included, create their own teaching aids such as presentations or drawings based on their own experience.

While it's not directly related to the K-12 school system, you might be curious about some of the knowledge areas a flight instructor must be a subject matter expert in. An experienced instructor easily spends thousands of hours and several years of traditional study and practical experience with these topics in order to be able to effectively teach them to others:

  • Weather - why it happens and how conditions form
  • Airspace - where you can fly, and all the related rules
  • Radio Communications - saying the right thing to ATC
  • Aircraft Systems - how airplanes work on a detailed level
  • Navigation - making a flight plan, then executing it correctly
  • Weight and Balance - planning for fuel, passengers, and bags
  • Emergency Procedures - landing safely when things go wrong
  • And many, many more things!

My experience as a flight instructor includes the teaching of ground school classes at one of the largest flight schools in the country. I provided traditional classroom instruction to new student pilots, as well as training to other new hire flight instructors in my role of management at the flight school. I also created the curriculum for a unique program which allowed high school students the opportunity to obtain a pilot license during the school year, and I was the primary instructor overseeing a team of other instructors working with these students. My current position at the Federal Aviation Administration requires a minimum amount of instructor experience, and that experience is applied to decisions made in the course of my employment.

As a flight instructor for over 6 years, I plan to use the experience I've gained as an educator to guide school policies in the right direction. Bad policies and lack of support will have a tangible negative impact on MCPS students, staff, and families. Though my educator experience is not strictly equivalent to that of a traditional teacher, I believe that I understand many of the challenges our teachers and students face, and I am sympathetic to them. I've dealt with restrictive policies and regulations which don't always make sense, lack of proper resources, difficult students and third parties, and challenging instructional environments. I would be happy to do what I can to alleviate some of these challenges where it makes sense to do so, and where the school board might be so empowered.

Enough About Me.

The Decision Is Yours.

Rob and wife Alecia at a 20s themed party in 2013

Hopefully I've given you enough information to see that I'm a responsible and reasonable candidate for our local Missoula government. The next step is to learn more about why I'm running for the MCPS school board. This year's election is important for a number of reasons, not least of which is a push by anti-science candidates to take over the school board and have the potential to implement bad policies and decisions.

If you still have questions about me, please feel free to reach out by contacting me using the information at the bottom of each page or the Contact Rob page. I'm happy to chat and give you more information on my qualifications, thoughts and positions on issues. I certainly don't have all of the answers and we may not agree on some things, but I'll always tell you what I think and where I stand.

You may also be interested in browsing the other sections of this website, such as the Frequently Asked Questions and Blog entries. As time goes on, I hope to add more entries to each of them in order to address common questions and popular local issues. Note that everything on this website comes directly from me - I write all content and develop all pages, unless otherwise specifically noted.

And finally, if you agree with my message and you want to contribute to the success of my campaign, please see the How To Help page. I'm grateful for any support, no matter what it is. Even the simple act of telling one other person about my candidacy and why you agree is helpful.

Thanks again for visiting my site, and my wife and I look forward to what the future brings.
